What makes the perfect pub? You get to decide.
From taprooms and gastropubs to speakeasies and Irish bars, you name it, there’s an option to suit everyone. But what makes for a great time at the pub?

If you ask ten people what makes the perfect pub experience, you’ll probably get ten different answers. For one person, it’s a roaring fire and a pint of something local. For another, it’s a lively beer garden on a summer’s evening. And for someone else, it might be the smell of Sunday roast, a comfy corner, and their family at the next table. For us, it depends on who we’re with and how we’re feeling that day.

But that’s the beauty of pubs: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The perfect pub experience is as unique as the people who walk through the door. Let’s take a look at some of the things that make a pub stand out and why they resonate differently for everyone.

The setting: cosy nooks vs. open spaces

Some of us love the charm of an old-school pub, with low ceilings, photos on the wall, and a snug by the fire where we can tuck ourselves away with a glass of red or a warming cuppa. It’s like home from home - familiar and comforting.

Others prefer more modern vibes, an extensive cocktail menu, sleek décor, and big tables where you can gather all of your friends.

The perfect setting depends on what you’re looking for. Are you catching up on life with a close friend, or hosting a raucous reunion with your mates? The answer shapes what “perfect” looks like.

The atmosphere: quiet and relaxed vs. buzzing and lively

There’s a fine balance when it comes to a pub’s ambience. For some, it’s all about peace and quiet - a spot to enjoy a good book by yourself, a meaningful chat without shouting over music, or a game of cards with the kids.

For others, the best nights are the lively ones. Live bands, packed quiz nights, or football matches that get everyone out of their seat.

A pub’s atmosphere sets the tone for your visit, and the perfect vibe depends on your mood and the company you’re keeping.

The food and drink: comforting classics vs. small plates and trends

Ah, the menu - a make-or-break factor for many of us. For traditionalists, nothing beats classic pub grub: fish and chips, steak pie, or a towering burger with all the trimmings. It’s hearty, it’s familiar, and it hits the spot every time.

But plenty of us are drawn to pubs that push boundaries with their food and drink. Artisan cocktails, vegan options, or a menu inspired by global cuisine – pubs that add a twist and something a bit different to keep things interesting.

The beauty of it is, many pubs now offer both. You can often still get a perfect pint of lager or opt for a nitro-infused stout brewed in a microbrewery two miles away.

The people: friendly locals vs. anonymity

Here’s an interesting one. Some people want to walk into a pub where everybody knows their name (yep, cue the Cheers theme tune). They love the sense of familiarity, the welcoming nod from the bartender, and a chat with the regulars.

Others enjoy a new pub or a place where they can blend in with the crowd, enjoy the atmosphere, catch up with their friends, or quietly sip a drink without any obligation to socialise.

Activities: all about the extras?

Sometimes, a great pub isn’t just about the food, drink, or ambience - it’s about what’s happening. For some, the best pubs are those that offer something extra: quiz nights, live music, karaoke, darts nights or board games.

For others, simplicity is key. They’re not looking for bells and whistles; they’re looking for a place to unwind, without distractions.

Why does it matter?

The diversity of opinions is precisely what makes pubs so special. They’re a chameleon of the hospitality world, able to adapt and cater to all tastes. One evening, a pub might host a raucous comedy night; the next, it’s a quiet haven for a family meal.

At their core though, we believe pubs are about connection - whether you’re bonding with your mates over a game of pool, enjoying a family dinner, or striking up a chat with a stranger at the bar.

How we’re helping you find your perfect pub

We believe there’s a perfect pub for every occasion, and we’re here to help you find yours. We’re asking pubs to tell us about the amenities and services they offer, so you can easily find the experience you’re after.

Your ideal pub (for whatever mood you’re in) is out there - and we want to help you discover it. Because whether it’s a cosy pint by the fire or a lively night of laughter and music, the perfect pub experience is about what makes you happy.
